Although it is my primary job to run our home like the mutinous pirate ship that it is, I am a firm believer that the entire emotional burden of doin’ so is to primarily be shared with my husband, but also with our man cubs. My philosophy is simply this: We all live here. Therefore we all contribute to the responsibility of the upkeep of our home. We all have feelings, and needs, and passions to boot. Sharin’ the emotional burden of cultivatin’ those things is also a responsibility of the entire family. Primarily, the burden falls upon my husband and I. This is a no brainer! However, in order to raise empathetic humans, they have to know and understand that we are to be respectful and supportive of one another as well.
The main way we accomplish these things is by bein’ honest with ourselves about what we lacked as children. And then we work to fill the gaps we lacked while parentin’ our children. The easiest way I found to accomplish this with all hands on deck was to focus on me first. Sounds selfish, yes? Not really. I had to discover for myself what I needed in order to be a more emotionally present wife and mother. I had to discover where I was responsible for too many things, and therefore I washed my hands of the tasks, assignin’ them to everyone else. And I held that boundary like my life depended on it.
This resulted in the creation of the Task Master Cheat Sheet. It created a flow for our household that we did not have before. This re-evaluation of our entire household also created the desire to be more proactive in praisin’ our children, recognizin’ their spiritual and emotional growth, helpin’ them work through difficult tasks alongside us instead of entirely on their own, and so much more. There was a serious transformation in our home. One that we are beyond blessed and grateful for.
